Play therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child’s natural medium of self-expression. It is a form of treatment that helps children and families to express their emotions, improve their communication, and solve problems.
Sometimes they may re-enact or play out traumatic or difficult life experiences in order to make sense of their past and cope better with their future. It is a most commonly used with children from 3 to 12 years of age.
A Play Therapy programme of support will be over a minimum of 20 sessions, which can take place within a school or community setting. Play therapy is a child-centred approach, with sessions on an individual basis or in sibling groups. The therapist uses regular feedback processes to communicate with and support parents or carers.
