Mentoring

For some children, developing a trusting relationship with a mentor can help them make positive changes to their social, school and family lives.

Building confidence and self-esteem, mentoring also encompasses building positive relationships with others, social inclusion, engagement or re-engagement with education, dealing with emotions, finding potential careers, hobbies and sports, managing anger and frustration, and involvement in community activities.

Family Compass’s mentoring service consists of 1:1 support for young people which can be used to complement family support work or as stand-alone provision in or out of school.

  • Emphasis is placed on building a relationship with the young person to build trust and support good communication
  • A strengths based approach is used to value the young person as an individual and build on their tools of resilience
  • Social modelling supports young people to navigate emotionally difficult situations they may experience

The mentoring format is applicable to all school age children (4-16) but can also be tailored to young adults. Sessions may consist of school visits, home visits, trips to local attractions or leisure activities, general social experience (shopping centres, cafes, libraries, parks etc.), visits to potential new school placements and also facilitating and accompanying to meetings, placements, courts or presentations.

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.
