Post-adoption support

Many families need therapeutic support following adoption. Adopted children have often experienced early trauma and separation and may find it hard to form relationships, developing challenging coping strategies.

At Family Compass we have a skilled therapeutic team who have specific experience of supporting children and families post-adoption.

The Adoption Support Fund (ASF)  was introduced in 2016, and has just been extended until March 2022. Up to £5000 is available per child to fund specific therapies.

The fund is available for children living in England up to and including the age of 21 who are adopted and were previously in local authority care in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, children who have been adopted from overseas, and for children who are subject to a Special Guardianship Order and were previously in care.

To access the Fund, the local authority will need to provide an assessment of your family’s adoption support needs, normally through a social worker. If the assessment identifies that therapeutic support would be of benefit, the social worker applies to the adoption support fund. They will explore therapeutic support options available with you.
