Dramatherapy relies less on the spoken word than some therapies, using techniques which may include music, movement, drama and art.
Dramatherapists are registered and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) having undertaken Masters level training with an approved course at a university.
Sessions focus on:
- Working with movement and the body to gain greater awareness of physical sensations and how to manage strong feelings
- Working creatively with play to make connections and build relationships with others to improve emotional health and wellbeing
- Using creative expression to develop an emotional language
- Building confidence and nurturing a positive self-view
Dramatherapy support is over a minimum of 20 sessions, and can take place within a school or community setting. The therapist uses regular feedback processes to communicate with and support parents or carers.
