Vanessa Lyons, Trainee Counsellor

I hold a degree in Human Behavioural Studies, a path shaped by many years working in retail where I witnessed first-hand how deeply people’s mental health can be affected by everyday pressures.

That experience sparked a quiet but persistent curiosity in me — a need to understand why so many individuals were struggling beneath the surface. Over time, that curiosity grew into a genuine commitment to explore the human mind with compassion and depth. During my studies, I developed a strong interest in counselling theories and how they translate into real‑world support. This blend of academic learning and lived experience has guided the direction of my professional journey. Creativity has always been an important part of who I am — whether through artistic expression, making things with my hands, or finding imaginative ways to connect with people. I also find deep comfort in being around animals, whose presence brings a sense of grounding and gentle companionship. And living near the sea has become a source of calm and solace for me; its rhythm, openness, and quiet strength mirror the steady, compassionate support I hope to offer in my life. Now, in the final year of my Level 4 Diploma, I am delighted to be joining Family Compass, where I can continue to grow, support others, and put my learning into meaningful practice.
