I have been working with children, young people and families for over 25 years and gained my Social Work and Masters degree in 2001.
I have experience of working in Child protection and safeguarding teams, children’s homes and for the last 7 years as a Family finding social worker in the Adoption sector. This included the transition to a Regional Adoption Agency, covering 3 local authorities in the south west.
I have previously travelled and worked abroad with children in orphanages from different cultures, as well as more recently helping families seeking asylum in the UK supporting them with their trauma experiences. I also volunteer for a local charity (FIG) supporting families who have experienced bereavement. This entails running groups for children and parents to process and talk about their loss.
Part of my most recent role within Adopt South West included working with fostered and adopted children, assessment, support and planning for children to move to their adopted families. It was here I became interested in therapeutic models and particularly Theraplay, seeing the benefits for children and their carers making positive connections and lasting change to improve attachments. It’s fun and playful, which means anyone can have a go! I am passionate about supporting relationships to be strong, connected, loving and joyful, building resilience and confidence in both children and carers alike.
I am Theraplay Level 1 and 2 trained and I am working towards being fully certified as a Theraplay Practitioner. I have completed my Level one DDP (Dyadic Developmental Practice) which compliments the Theraplay in its playful, accepting, curious and empathic ethos. I have also trained in the PPF (Past Present, Futures) model of Lifestory work, and have supported children to better understand their life experiences through this work.
When I am not working, I love to walk on the beach with my family, and have a swim in the sea when it’s warmer… as well as having a crochet project on the go at any one time!
